Tulisan ini memusatkan perhatian pada penelitian makna sebutan Anak Manusia yang sering kali digunakan Yesus untuk menyebut diri-Nya sendiri. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan topikal, penulis berpendapat bahwa ungkapan tersebut merupakan sebuah reinterpretasi yang dilakukan oleh Yesus terhadap konsep Mesias yang dipahami oleh orang Israel pada zaman-Nya. Paradigma populer mengenai Mesias revolusioner yang dipahami oleh orang Israel ditafsirkan kembali, dikritik, sekaligus dipatahkan oleh Yesus yang menegaskan klaim mesianis-Nya justru melalui kematian dan kebangkitan-Nya. Yesus bukanlah seorang oportunis yang memanfaatkan situasi untuk menarik simpati dan dukungan massa. Ia memilih jalan yang jauh dari kebiasaan manusia yang haus akan kuasa, yaitu jalan penderitaan, jalan sejati, jalan Anak Manusia.
